Bryologist 90: 163 (1987)

Crocynia vouauxii Hue, Bull. Soc. Bot. France 71: 392 (1924); — Leproloma vouauxii (Hue) J.R.Laundon, Lichenologist 21: 13 (1989)

T: Jarville-la-Malgrange, Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France, on bark and mosses on Ulmus, L.Vouaux s.n., in Claudel, Claudel & Harmand, Lich. Gall. Praec. Exs. No. 300; lecto: BM, fide J.R.Laundon, loc. cit.

Thalluscrustose, very variable, yellow-grey to yellow-green, completely leprose throughout as a loose mass of irregular lumps of soredia, or stratified and at first usually forming rosettes, but later irregularly spreading, indeterminate, to 3–5 cm wide and 0.6 mm thick. Margin occasionally with well-developed lobes to 0.9 mm wide with raised rims, sometimes wrinkled and partly free from the substratum. Soredia coarse, usually ±globose and 80–300 μm wide, sometimes forming irregular flattened to elongate-terete clumps to 700 µm wide; very rarely with a few projecting hyphae at the margins. Medulla distinct and white, or not apparent. Hyphae 2–5 μm thick. Lower surface often pale brown (partly due to adhering soil particles), with sparse to abundant tomentum of colourless to brownish hyphae not visible from above.Photobiont cells ±spherical, 8–16 μm diam. Hypothallus brown or absent.
CHEMISTRY: Thallus K–, C–, KC–, P– or P+ orange, UV+ purple-blue; containing pannaric acid 6-methyl ester (major), ±4-oxypannaric acid 6-methyl ester (minor), ±4-oxypannaric acid 2-methyl ester (trace), ±pannaric acid (minor), ±pannaric acid 2-methyl ester (trace to minor), ±methyl porphyrilate (trace to minor), ±porphyrilic acid (trace), ±atranorin (trace), ±roccellic acid (trace), ±8-oxypannaric acid 6-methyl ester (trace), ±4-oxypannaric acid dimethyl ester (trace).

Rare in the A.C.T. and Tas.; grows on soil banks in open Eucalyptus woodland and pasture. Also known from North and South America, Europe, Africa and New Zealand.
